Saltivska Line (blue)

The Saltivska Line is the second line of the Kharkiv Metro and is shown in blue on system maps. Its primary purpose is to connect the city centre with Saltivka, the city’s largest residential district, from which the line takes its name. The line also serves several of Kharkiv’s major universities and higher education institutions.

One of the line’s most distinctive features is its 980-metre-long enclosed metro bridge, a unique structure with no direct equivalent elsewhere in the world. The line currently comprises eight stations and has a total length of 10.2 km. The longest interstation section is between Kyivska and Akademika Barabashova (2,408 m). The deepest station is Yaroslava Mudroho (35 m below ground), while Saltivska is the busiest station on the line. The line is operated from Saltivske Depot, located near Akademika Barabashova Station.

According to the current development plans, the line is to be extended by one station to the north, towards Pivnichna Saltivka, and by one station to the south, towards the Kharkiv Circus. In the longer term, proposals also include a further extension by two stations to the Novozhanove district, as well as the construction of a branch line from Akademika Barabashova to Skhidna Saltivka, using branch operation.

Timeline of line extensions:

  • 11 August 1984 – Istorychnyi Muzei – Akademika Barabashova (5 stations, 6.6 km)
  • 24 October 1986 – Akademika Barabashova – Saltivska (3 stations, 3.6 km)
