Kholodnohirsko-Zavodska Line (red)

The Kholodnohirsko–Zavodska Line (known as the Sverdlovsko–Zavodska Line until 1995) is the oldest line of the Kharkiv Metro and is shown in red on system maps. It runs across the city from west to southeast. The line was designed to connect the city centre with three railway stations, four bus terminals, several major industrial enterprises, the Central Market, and the Metalist Stadium.

The line serves the residential districts of Kholodna Hora, Novi Budynky, and the KhTZ (Tractor Plant) area, as well as two of the city’s principal thoroughfares: Poltavskyi Shlyakh Street and Heroiv Kharkova Avenue. It currently comprises 13 stations and has a total length of 17.3 km. The deepest station is Maidan Konstytutsii (26 m below ground), while Kholodna Hora is the busiest station on the line.

The line is operated from Nemyshlyanske Depot, located near Turboatom Station. It is named after its western terminus, Kholodna Hora, and the numerous industrial plants it was originally built to serve. According to the current development plans, the line is expected to be extended by one station to the west, towards the Zaliutyne district, and by two stations to the east, towards the Rohanskyi residential area. In the more distant future, a further western extension to the Nova Bavariia district or the urban-type settlement of Pesochyn has also been proposed.

Timeline of line extensions:

  • 23 August 1975 – Kholodna Hora – Turboatom (8 stations, 10.4 km)
  • 11 August 1978 – Turboatom – Industrialna (5 stations, 6.9 km)
